laughingrachel asked: I might be a little late, but to add to that whole Catholic Girl Problems thing. I was raised Catholic too, and I remember when my cousin committed suicide and my church refused to hold her wake or her funeral because suicide is an unforgivable sin according to my church. I don’t know why she killed herself but I do know that when she did she was 16 was pregnant and I can’t help hold our church accountable at least a little bit for shaming and not educating about sex and vilifying abortion.

Since I wrote about my own experiences being raised Catholic yesterday, a lot of people have written to me about theirs. This is just heartbreaking. I am so, so sorry for your loss. The Church failed her and your family on so many levels.

  6. betweeneverythingandtwo said: thankfully, they’ve changed that over the past few years… it was pretty shameful that both burials and funerals of those who commit suicide were forbidden. the joy is, of course, the flock doesn’t match up with the church. thank god.
